Another Day at the Office

Posted on June 2, 2014 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

This past week has been just that, another day at the office, for most people that means the same thing day after day and that pretty much sums up whats been going on with walleye fishing. You can find walleye in predictable places, catch them with pretty much anything, though from my experience, minnows have worked the best, and when i say minnows i mean spot-tail shiners, when i was out fishing with a friend last week, the minute we ran out of shiners the bite almost immediately dropped off, we still caught some on fat heads, but not nearly as much. This time of year fish are hungry, the flashier and larger your minnow is, the better chance its going to be seen and eaten.

Water surface temps early in the week were as high as the low 70’s, while air temp were an unseasonal 80-90 degrees, as the week progressed temps began to cool, and we got some long needed rain, and that seems to be all we’ve been getting weather-wise the last few days.

Jig and a minnow has still been the best presentation, with leeches and crawlers  beginning to factor into anglers bait arsenal as well, I’ve even seen a rogue crank bait tied on to some people’s lines, while I think it’s a little early for that, I like to be proven wrong.

The best area’s to fish have been Stoney, Pine, and Otter tail Points, West Goose Flats have a nice mix of walleye and perch, while area’s in Sucker Bay, specifically 2nd Duck point have been good for a mixed bag of Northern, Walleye and Jumbo Perch. Area’s closer to home around Grassy and Marshal Point and Pete’s Hole, have also been producing, fishing any windy side of reefs, points and bars are going to put the odds in your favor.

Pictured below from L to R: Pat Metro one of the “Michigan” guys with a fat northern and a batch of walleye he caught while fishing in Sucker Bay, Pat was part of a 6 man crew who came, and they left with limits of everything: walleye, perch and pike and even a few sun burns!

Jena Kulenkamp from Eden Prairie, MN with her first Leech Lake Walleye, a 27.5″!

Scot Bowman from New Hope, MN with a couple jumbo’s that went towards his limit

Featured image up top is of Ryan Thompson, also from Eden Prairie, MN and I’d say that his thumbs up pretty much sums up the way we feel about the fishing right now, this lake just keeps getting better and better.

Pictured below is a little scare we had last week, a tree fell on a power line and caused a spark, and in turn a little fire started, thankfully we have a quick response team in town and they got the fire out before it got out of control, as you can see in the pic, this is really a little too close for comfort for us here.
