Nuptials and some Walleye

Can you believe we are already 2 weeks into August, oh how time flies! this season has been nothing short of amazing for us here at “the rock” and we appreciate each and every one of you, without you, we couldn’t be doing what we love. while amazing wouldn’t be the adjective that i would choose to describe the current walleye fishing we’re having, I’d lean more towards… better, it’s getting better. The last couple weeks the weather has been so nice, we’ve had highs in the lower 80’s, as much sunshine as anyone could want, light winds and pretty much zero rain it has made for wonderful vacation weather, sitting by the pool and getting a sun tan, usually stable weather like this makes for consistently good fishing, I think this weather has caused the fish to also go on vacation (a short one).

The end of last week we finally had that change in the weather pattern that we needed, the barometer shifted from its oh so stable reading to one that made the fishing click to on, and we had a couple of days of above average fishing, walleye were being caught easily, and on many spots, Submarine Island and Annex Reef were by far the best area, either by slow trolling shadraps in 6-12 feet of water, or by pulling crawler harnesses with spinners, seeming that red and green blades were the best, other areas’ around Pelican Island, North Bar, and over to Mokey Reef also had good reports, weed edges up in Sucker Bay and over near Goose Island are also producing, areas with some weeds are giving up some jumbo Perch as well, look for Perch to be showing up in the south shore bays, and the ever popular Second Duck Point very soon.

Pictured below from L to R: The brothers Brooks, from Monticello, MN with a nice limit of eater walleye they caught while pulling shad raps on the reefs, Shelby Osterberg from Garden Prairie, IL with a couple dandy pike, the biggest weighing in at 9 pounds, and Jack LePage from Monticello, MN with a large mouth bass he caught while fishing in our kids fishing tourney, he won biggest fish for his efforts!

Muskie fishing continues to be above average, with water temps into the mid 70s and wonderful stable weather they have really ramped up their feeding, numerous fish are being caught, while I haven’t heard of any monsters, fish in the mid to lower 40 inch range have been reported. Shallow mid-lake rock structure has been best, with some fish are being caught at the dwindling cabbage weed beds on the lake as well.

Pictured below are some shots from the #bomsonwedding where Dave Thompson and Tanea Bement tied the knot on our front lawn, the weather was great, and the ceremony was perfect, we couldn’t be happier for them. Thank you for sharing such a special occasion with us.
