The Action was Memorable

Everyone here at Big Rock Resort would like to dedicate this report/blog to the veterans of our armed forces, as we celebrate memorial day.we also celebrate you. We thank you for your service: past, present and future, we would not be able to live the way we do without the sacrifices you have made, and for that, I thank you.

Now, on to the fishy part.

Last week picked right up where the previous one did, rain, rain and more rain, while its greening up the grass and raising our water level, its making my shoes a little squishy, I’ve had to dodge a mine field of small rivers and lakes throughout our lawn and the grass is starting to look like a jungle. Despite all of that, fishing remains good. We had guests that were around the middle of the week and they had no problem getting enough fish to fry, and take home with a nice amount of slot fish peppered in, it’s always fun catching those 24+ inch fish even though they have to go back.

As the holiday weekend drew closer the weather improved and the rain took a hiatus, until today (May 25th) temps rose into the 70’s with plentiful sunshine and light winds making for one of the nicest memorial weekends we’ve had in a long time, and the fishing did not disappoint, and when I say disappoint I mean it was ridiculous, in a good way.

My filet knife got a workout this weekend, I don’t know the exact number, but I’d guess it’s somewhere around 500 fish that I cleaned, it feels nice to sit and write this after a couple of marathon cleaning sessions. One cabin alone had over 60 keeper walleye and 40 northern pike.

Pictured Below from L to R: Ryan, Kyle, Holt, Mike, and Anthony all from the Stillwater, MN area with their last hoorah of walleye – Chuck, Steve, and Matthew Suchy from Minneapolis with a couple of hours of work up in Sucker Bay and a pic of me, well my hand, and a pile of a tasty treat of walleye cheeks us cleaners tend to collect, I’ve got about 4 pounds worth in the freezer, and if you’re going to be here let me know if you want to try some.

While the lake was as busy as its ever been, the location of the action really boiled down to one spot – Sucker Bay, mainly along the west side too, Deadhead Bay, and Hardwood Points. Water temps are rising, currently around 60 degrees and the bait of choice was a jig tipped with a shiner minnow, it ended up being quite a variety pack of fish, walleye, jumbo perch and feisty northern pike.

Pictured below from L to R: John Heroff and Paul Kreutzfeldt from Stillwater, MN with a days bag of keeper walleye, Kevin Luehrs from Glencoe, MN an owner here at Big Rock, with a beauty of a 26″er, and Scot Bowman from New Hope, MN with a 24 inch walleye selfie.

With the holiday weekend coming to an end, I hope everyone had a good time and had safe trips home, we appreciate all your business over the years, and this year is another for the books, we couldn’t do it without you. Thank you all so much. We always look forward to seeing you, and hate to see you go.
