Good Luck Aplenty

Another week has come and gone here in the beautiful north woods of Walker, Mn and let me tell you it has been great, great weather, great people and the fishing remains some of the best we have seen in recent years, the changes to the slot limit here on Leech Lake has really made a huge difference in the amount of fish being kept.

The weather over the weekend couldn’t have been better, highs rose into the upper 70’s and low 80’s with plentiful sunshine and just the right amount of walleye chop as we like to call it, to get those marble eyed fish into the boat, water temps are into the low 60’s now and seasonal walleye movement is going to start soon. With shiner minnow availability dwindling away for the season, anglers will begin to change over to leeches and night crawlers for their live bait presentations, while some will opt for the ease of crank bait trolling.

Pictured below from L to R: Andrew Larson from Lakeville, MN with a nice stringer of walleye that he and his parents caught while fishing in Sucker Bay – Cody Hanson from Oak Grove, MN with a 22 inch catch and release walleye, a nice birthday present for the newly 14-year-old – Scot Bowman from New Hope, MN and Me (Ray) with an evenings catch of walleye and perch, we were fishing a stones throw from our harbor at Grassy Point, the perch came from Sucker Bay earlier in the day.

Popular fishing area’s continue to be up in Sucker Bay, from Hardwood Points up to Deadhead Bay and across the bay to First and Second Duck Points, there is a wide variety of structure, weeds, sand and rocks up there and along with that come a mix of species of fish, Stoney, Ottertail, Pine and Grassy Points also have been producing walleye, walleye are still shallow, look for wind-blown points and shorelines, the evening bite seems to be the best and if you’re able to get your hands on some shiner minnows if will definitely raise your odds.

This weekend was the annual Leech Lake Walleye Tournament, the water was rough on Saturday but that didn’t stop the 165+ boats that had signed up from trying to win the $13,200 first prize purse. The winners of the tournament weighed in a 2 day total of 31.57 lbs and the fishing fleet caught a total of just under 1300 fish for the 2 days, 50 of them being the over 26 inch variety, the live release rate was 98% good to see those fish caught and released successfully, now if they would only release them out in front of the resort, wishful thinking right?

Muskie season is creeping up on us quick, too, I’ll be in touch with local guides for reports and hot baits, I plan on doing a little muskie opener fishing myself, I’ll forward everything I find out to you all.
