Quick Turnaround

Posted on July 6, 2015 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

After a week of below average fishing performances, we have had a nice uptick in action. Northern Pike remain as hungry and willing to bite as ever, over 50 have gone under the knife and that number rises daily. Walleye have also been willing to grab onto a lure or 2, summer trolling spots have begun to heat up and as things are going, July is shaping up to be another good fishing month. Water temps are staying steady in the mid 70’s with sunny days into the 80’s forecasted, water temps are going to continue to climb – remember, higher water temps make for higher metabolism in fish equaling more activity, quality of fishing is linked hand in hand with water temps. While most are thinking about swimming, laying in the sun or shopping, summer fishing can be some of the best of the season. Next week we have some of the best fisherman we see here at the resort staying with us, they troll hard and fish long hours, they will find out what is really going on out there.

pictured below from L to R: Liesl Bower-Jernigan, her Parents Roy and Patricia, from Eagan, MN Pat has been coming to Big Rock for over 40 years and has continued the tradition bringing her family every July. Roy caught his 9 pound Northern (the biggest I’ve seen this year) in Uram Bay – wonderful family, we look forward to seeing them every year.

Walleye are scattered all over right now, many presentations are catching fish. Anglers are still finding fish on wind-blown points and flats, the area we call Pete’s Hole has been especially good, there has been many boats fishing this area and with good results, Stoney Point, Pine Point and around Goose Island in the weeds has also been producing fish. Tie on a Jig tipped with a leech or chunk of worm and get drifting, trolling is also doing really well right now, when trolling you’re going to find that you catch quite a few more pike in the process, but you will catch walleye too. Stick to areas around Big Rock Reef, Submarine Island and Fleschs Reef, North Bar and area’s around Pelican Island are also worth stopping by. Forage based colors are working best, Perch, Crawfish, trying more colorful options like Fire Tiger can also work.

Pictured below from L to R: Dave and Jan Beniak from Eden Prairie, MN – Jan has really had the hot hand as of late, she is single-handedly feeding walleye to her entire family.

Muskie fishing has remained consistent, Pelican island remains the hot spot with area’s in Sucker Bay also showing good activity, top-water baits and smaller fast-moving baits seem to be what is triggering fish right now, be ready to make those 10,000 casts and wait for your reward.

Pictured Below from L to R: Cody Hanson from Oak Grove, MN and Dennis Osterberg from Belvidere, IL with a couple nice small mouth bass, they have been showing up more and more and bigger each year, will be interesting to see what the future holds for smallies on Leech, and Eric Hathaway from Storm Lake, IA with a few pike.

The fourth of July has come and gone, with more people in the Walker area celebrating our nations birthday than I have ever seen before, the fireworks display was as busy as ever, too. The local chapter of the Lion’s Club really did a good job this year.

Featured image up top is of Brian Beniak from Eden Prairie, showing off a couple of keepers he managed to keep on his line, the rest of his weekend didn’t have the same result.
