Still Hanging On

With another beautiful summer week in the books, fishing continues to hang on. We’re seeing what is usual for this time of year. Water temps have remained steady into the mid 70’s and we have had our share of summer weather, highs into the lower 80’s with plentiful sunshine have made walleye fishing a bit of a struggle but northern pike don’t seem to have any issues, providing much-needed action for the whole family. While it’s very easy to give up and sit by the pool with a cold one in hand and catch some rays, I’d suggest keeping at it, anglers that have put in the extra time, fished the prime low-light periods have had the best luck, a lot of the time the window of opportunity is just a couple of hours in the morning or evening, make sure you’re out at those times, and put the odds in your favor.

We’ve gone pretty much full into trolling now, a few anglers are still using live bait rigs with leeches or night crawlers, but with minimum success, unless catching rock bass by the pale full is okay with you. Your best bets really are going to be with crankbaits, change color’s often, sizes and work all different depths, stay mobile and put the miles in, you’ll be rewarded. Mid lake reef structure has been best for walleye: Submarine, Annex, Mokey, Flesches and Larson’s Reefs are where you’re going to want to land, stick to forage based colors, perch, craw fish, golds and blacks are working best. If catching pike is what you want to do, head over to Miller or Uram Bay, the small ones will almost jump in your live-well, they’ll make for a wonderful meal.

Muskie fishing continues to be good, with stable summer weather it has really kicked the big guys into action, Pelican Island continues to be the hot spot, look for big boulders, shallow warm water with deeper water nearby, stick to the smaller stuff, and keep it in high gear, and don’t forget those figure 8’s!

Featured Image up top is of Catherine Hanson from Oak Grove, MN with a beauty of a 23 inch walleye, one of 3 she caught on that particular trip, 3 more than anyone else in the boat caught, she showed he husband and son how its done.

The craziness that is Moondance Jam is in a couple of days, with 20,000 people expected to infiltrate the Walker area to attend the 24th annual classic rock fest. If you’re going to be in the Walker area plan ahead town will surely be more busy than usual.
