Trolling to Success

It’s getting to be that time of year, while it leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth seeing the number of children here dwindle, most are ready to head back to the classroom and be with their friends once again and get back to learning. Even though our pool may not get as much use this time of year, the lake will get a work out. The early fall season can be some of the best fishing that we see for the year, and its a shame more people aren’t able to join us. With days becoming shorter, and water temps already beginning to cool, more seasonal fish movements are on the way.

Walleye fishing continues to be a battle each day, with some wins and many losses, just remain positive there are always a hungry fish or 2 out there, you just need to find them. Stick to trolling, you’re able to cover more ground and find those picky eaters – change lures and colors often and don’t spend too much time at one spot – use the low-light periods to your advantage make sure you’re out early, and stay out late, you wanna be out there when the fish turn on.

Pictured  below from L to R: Cody Hanson from Oak Grove, MN with a few keeper walleye and a pike, and Dylan McDonough from Tallmage, OH with a 42 inch muskie he caught while trolling Big Rock Reef with his father, Dan, very impressive catch from the 14-year-old. A shot of our Wednesday kids fishing tournament participants Jack LePage in the blue and black shirt had the biggest, and Bryan Belvedere in the orange Big Rock shirt had the most.

Area’s around Pine Point, Grand View Flats and up around Goose Island and Snake Pits have been best, these areas are mostly sand flats with minimal weed coverage and some short sand grass, they won’t interfere too much with long line trolling. Main lake rock structure is showing some signs of improvement, Big Rock, Mokey and Flesch’s Reef are all worth dragging a line through also.

Perch are beginning to show themselves as well, not the jumbo keepers we look forward to each year but plenty of small fish to keep everyone busy, try Uram, Miller or Sucker Bays, hopefully this years fall Perch season takes off, the last couple years have been less than ideal.

Muskie activity continues to be strong, shallow rock structure around Pelican Island remains the go-to spot on the lake with Submarine and Annex Reef also contributing, Muskies are going to start fattening up for the long winter soon, swap to larger slower moving baits and hold on!
