Get Ready for Fall Fishing

Posted on August 17, 2015 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

Well, we’ve survived another week of the high temps and humidity variety, and we’re back to temperatures that I like. Last week we had to contend with temps inching into the 90’s and humidity that wanted to do the same along with calm winds and tons of sun, fortunately it only lasted a few days, and now as I type this it’s 74 degrees of wonderfulness.

Fishing continues to be challenging, warm water temps tend to push fish deeper towards cooler water and lower their activity levels. Fishing deep water can be especially tough, with walleye scattered and most people’s tackle selections limited to what can consistently fish deep, the odds aren’t in your favor. With air and water temps dropping, comfortable early fall fishing action is just around the corner. Surface temps are in the 72-73 degree range now, with the mid to upper 60’s sweet spot only a couple of weeks away.

Trolling is still the name of the game if you’re chasing walleye and northern pike – as I’ve said before, cover as much water as you can, change lure colors and depths often, and hope for the best. If your plan is to put perch on the dinner menu, things are beginning to take shape, minnows fished with bobbers or jigs are starting to show promise, areas in Uram and Miller Bay have been giving up keeper size perch, not in the quantities that most anglers want, but enough to make it worth your while.

Stick to the mid-lake reefs, troll Mokey, Sub, Big Rock, and around Stoney Point, areas around Greg’s Breakline and Snake Pit Flats are also worth hitting. Perch, Crawfish and black and silver-colored shad raps or flicker shads are going to be best.

Muskie fishing remains some of the best we’ve had in recent years, they are really feeding heavy right now, there isn’t going to be a better time to be going after them than right now, Muskie tend to be the heaviest in the fall, but their activity levels fall off dramatically from this time of year were you can catch multiple active fish compared to maybe one big one. Stick to the rock piles around Pelican and Submarine, fast-moving top-water and in-line spinners are going to work best.

Activity around the Walker area may be dwindling down, fishing on the other hand is going to only get better, you can take advantage of our seasonal discounts, get 25% off all cabin rentals throughout the remainder of the season, come stay with us and put some fish in your freezer.
