Windy with a chance of Walleye

Posted on August 31, 2015 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

It’s been another interesting week here in the beautiful Northwoods of Minnesota. The week started off with chilly temps in the mid to upper 50’s accompanied by gusty winds from the North West to the North East making lake travel down right challenging and lowering surface water temps down to around 60 degrees, the wind did make the lake a nice shade of color that I would call white cap white. As the week progressed we got back into some familiar territory winds slowed down and the sun decided to show its self once again bringing temps back into the ever-comfortable 70’s. Fishing followed suit, as temps came up and winds died down walleye activity began to increase, it’ still not where it should be for this time of year, but its light years better than July. Trolling is still the most productive technique to get some fish into your boat. areas around Goose Island, Snake Pits, and West Goose Flats remain the best, walleye are also showing up on other more well-known reefs such as Big Rock, Mokey, Flesches, Gary’s and Submarine. Depths in the 8-12 foot range have been best, while sneaking a little shallower during low light periods. Keep plenty of different colors and sizes of shad raps and flicker shads on hand, switch often and cover lots of water.

With anticipation high for last weekends full moon, many anglers were left with a sour taste in their mouths. Night fishing for walleye never really caught hold, some fish were caught, many of which were in the slot and had to be returned to the water. regardless of what fish are or aren’t being caught, fishing during a full moon is an experience you all should have, the lake is incredibly beautiful at night, sometimes catching walleye is bonus.

Perch fishing is starting to pick up in bays along the south shore of the main lake (Miller and Uram) weed edges in Sucker and Agency Bay also have many hungry perch willing to bite, with many in the keeper range of 10 inches or better, look for the perch action to continue to get better as we progress farther into the fall fishing season. Tie on a small lead head jig tipped with a fathead minnow and get ready for lots of action.

Muskie action is really hit or miss right now, many anglers are out there counting down to their 10,000th cast in hopes of a big girl grabbing on, though most are left with sore backs and bruised ego’s. in just under 2 weeks the 48th annual Frank Schneider Jr. Memorial Muskie Tournament will be making another appearance, with a first place cash prize of $15,000, guided muskie trips and many other door prizes to be given out, it’s a fun weekend of fishing.
