Late Summers Push

Posted on September 7, 2015 · Posted in Leech Lake Fishing Report

Last week started off the same way as most of the recent weeks have, fishing was below average for this time of year, walleye and pike were coming in, just not what we usually see. Then Tuesday afternoon rolled around and the switch flipped. Aided by steady weather conditions walleye and pike began to come in by the dozens, yes, dozens. Over a few days time I easily cleaned 75 walleye and 50 northern pike, and from just a few cabins, right along side the walleye and pike jumbo yellow perch started showing their faces too adding to the excitement.

Troll, troll and troll some more, fish are everywhere right now, sand flats, rock reefs and weed edges, pretty much anywhere you stop you’re going to be in the right spot. Snake Pit Flats, and Annex reef were the most productive, with Mokey, Big Rock and Flesches reefs not far behind. Fish are also showing up on popular fall areas around Bear Island and Sugar and Battle Points.

Perch fishing is really beginning to heat up, it is showing much more promise this year than the last few. Big fish are starting to bite and many fish in the 10-11 inch range are being caught. Stick with light jigs tipped with fathead minnows and head over to Uram or Miller Bays, all the perch action you could want just minutes from our harbor – and the best thing yet, I’ll personally clean them for you!

Pictured below from L to R: Matt Woods from Prior Lake, MN with a beauty of a northern, Matt’s son Jacob with a 32″ northern he caught on a Top Raider while trying to find some muskies, and Chad Johnson from Cedar Rapids, IA with a 38″ muskie he boated not more than 1 hour into his fishing trip. The rest of their adventures in muskie fishing proved to be more frustrating, with many fish seen, many follows and strikes, but no more into the boat.

Featured image up top is of Mike Burnside from Cedar Rapids, Iowa – with a beautiful small mouth bass, a species of fish that has become more and more frequent over the last few years. Small mouth tend to hang out in some of the same areas as walleye (rocks) and make for some unexpected excitement, since they fight tooth and nail, jumping and splashing all the way to the boat.

The Walker area continues to have activities and attractions throughout the month of September, September 12th the 23rd Annual Ethnic Fest will take place with Ethnic music, crafts and cuisine from around the world, along with a parade and car show. For a list of scheduled activities click here.
