While summer 2016 is mostly in the rear view mirror we’re trying to savor the last few weeks we have, and with the help of mother nature it has really felt like summer these last few weeks. Last week we were greeted with more temps into the lower 80’s and some high 70’s a sprinkling of humidity and a couple of puffs of wind, it was about as pleasant a week as anyone could ask for.
With air temps that are just touching the hot area of the thermometer it tends to take its toll on fishing as well, and for the second consecutive week fishing has been below average, walleye in particular. There were a few bright spots with walleye deciding to cooperate for a few minutes if you happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Pictured below from L to R: Ben Girard his father Ken, Brady Giles and his father Scott from Wakonda, SD and Brandon, SD with the best stringer of small mouth bass I have ever seen come out of this lake, they were casting crank baits into 1-2 foot of water on little stoney point – Stephen Pommier from Yorkville, IL with a 36″ 9 pound northern – Earl Roed and his grandson from McIntosh, MN with a beautiful 50 inch class muskie – the Dostal party from Ashland, NE with a nice variety pack of leech lake fish.
During the small windows that walleye did bite, it seemed the they were looking for night crawlers more than anything, anglers tied on various spinner colors and headed into the north end of walker bay, areas around sand and cedar point turned out to be the best. There is a peppering of walleye hanging around the mid lake reef structure, if you find yourself in 12-16 foot of water with a crank bait tied on you might just catch dinner.
Northern and muskie fishing has continued to be pretty good, muskies are still active out in the main lake, look for them around pelican island, mokey and submarine island, look for muskie in shallow watch (2-4 feet) they love the warm water temps and love chasing small fast-moving baits, black is always a great choice of color.
Pictured below from L to R: Nick Olson from Vermillion, SD with a healthy muskie pushing 40 inches – Craig Nelson from Vermillion, SD with a nice slot walleye – 2 of Craig’s grandchildren modeling with a couple eater walleye.
Perch are starting to poke their noses around in weedy bays like sucker, uram and miller, we’re hoping this fall pans out and keeper perch are plentiful, the last few years you could catch hundreds of perch, just not many that were keeper size, so far this year it has been about 20 throwbacks to 1 keeper.
Pictured below from L to R: The McDonough family from Ohio and Iowa enjoying a hot dog and a bowl of chili at our Monday night get together – hot dog roasting in action – and finally a picture of our kids fishing contest contestants.
With Labor Day getting closer with each passing day we’ve begun to plan our annual Labor Day fish fry and pot luck with generous fish donations and plenty of volunteers we invite the whole resort, owners, friends and family to join us, and we still have some cabins available for the weekend. We would love to share a good time with you, give us a call and join in the fun.
