Hooks, Heroes, and Holidays

The last couple of weeks or so have been an interesting time here in the northwoods. Temperatures spiked into the 90s after op’ner and then did the opposite and tumbled down into the low 30s, blanketing much of the northern part of the state in frost. We, luckily, didn’t get quite that cold. Instead, we were greeted with some mid to upper 30s mornings and daytime highs that barely broke into the 40s. That, coupled with substantial easterly winds, made things, let’s say, challenging.

Leading up to Memorial Weekend, we saw that Mother Nature had forecasted exactly what we needed: calm, warm, and beautiful weather. Walleye fishermen would say it was too nice! I try not to put too much faith in the weather forecast, but it was hard not to jump for joy. The weekend also marks the start of our pool season here. It was wonderful to see kids splashing away outside.

We had a full house here at the resort for the holiday weekend. Our harbor was jam-packed with boats, and ice cream cones were steadily flowing out of the lodge. We hosted our annual Memorial Weekend Potluck on Sunday. Great food and great conversation were shared by all. The hustle and bustle of the resort during a holiday weekend is infectious – it gives us a little taste of the summer vacation season to come.

Anglers had unique conditions this year. Clear blue skies and next to no wind made Walleye fishing increasingly difficult. The lake has also become so clear that sneaking up on Walleye in shallow water is very tricky. Nevertheless, anglers of all ages got out on the beautiful blue water, tried, and succeeded. Many anglers shifted their attention towards Yellow Perch and Crappie. Perch bit, but Crappies were hard to come by. It was much different than the holiday free-for-all fishing weekends from the past, where our dock hands often spent their entire shifts cleaning and packaging fish.

Everyone here at Big Rock Resort would like to thank all of our guests – you are the reason we get to do what we do here in the beautiful northwoods. We would also like to thank and acknowledge all of the heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and our way of life. They will never be forgotten.
