Big Fish, Big Smiles

With another week in the books, and fishing on a slight decline from earlier weeks, we welcomed a new full house of guests, and they did their best to work around the weather and find some Walleye, some with more success than others. Weather early in the week was good, 70’s light winds, sunshine and no precipitation, come Wednesday that all changed, with day long soaking rain right into the afternoon on Thursday, my guess is we had 2-3 inches of rain during that time, lake levels rose easily 6-8 inches, and with low pressure cold fronts moving through the area, you know what happens with fishing.

Fish were still being caught, early in the week was better, with more anglers starting to tie on artificial crankbaits and long-line troll mid-lake reef structure. Shiner minnow population has all but ended for the season so most have changed over to leeches and night crawlers, with night crawlers being the better of the two, more and more of the fish I’ve been cleaning have started showing up with craw fish in their bellies, and that is a good sign its time to change over to crawlers, while trolling craw fish colored rapala’s can also be the ticket.

Area’s around Submarine, Mokey and Annex Reef were the best if trolling was your preferred method, while Big Rock Reef and Stoney Point weren’t far behind. Sugar Point north up to the Flats off 5 mile point were also good, it’s just a longer hike to get to some of those spots.

Pictured below from L to R: Nate Parry from Helena, MO with a beast of a northern 14lbs and 36 inches the biggest northern I’ve cleaned in almost 10 years

Aaron Poldervaart from Fort Dodge, IA, and his cousin Ezra Johnson from Charles City, IA, Ezra had the hot hand on a trip up to Sucker Bay coming back with a nice stringer of keeper Walleye and Pike, reluctantly he wouldn’t share with me what the hot lure was!

Brittany Graham from Fort Dodge, IA and a 43 inch Muskie she caught while tossing crankbaits over the weeds in Uram Bay, her boyfriend Aaron lended a hand in holding the giant (though the fish looks a little rough in the picture, and did bleed a bit, it is fine and swam away under its own power).

Pictured below From L to R: Jonah Rogers from Des Moines, IA with her first Walleye of the trip, for a while she wasn’t sure if it was going to happen!

Shanette Poldervaart from Fort Dodge, IA with a 27 inch and the biggest Walleye that was caught from her party.

Another shot of Brittany Graham, this time accompanied by Justin Rogers, showing that she can catch any species that Leech Lake has to offer.

While Muskie season has been open for a little over a week, I don’t have much to report on with them yet, other than the pictured Muskie above I haven’t heard or seen anything else, with rising water temps action should start to heat up soon, keep in touch and I’ll do my best to get the info out.

And to toot my own horn a little, Justin (pictured above) and I threw together a little video of me y-boning a northern. Check it out and let me know what you think.
