Birthday Batch O’ Walleye

Looking back over the last couple of weeks, it’s incredible to witness how fast things can change on a body of water this size. Walleye fishing, and fishing in general, has been making some dramatic changes as we push from spring to summer. Historically, this time of year is mayfly season, and this year it’s been weird, to say the least. There have been reports of the little critters littering shorelines and covering buildings. We have had some here this year, but nothing like the past. I feel like we’ve been fortunate with wind direction and that has taken a majority of them for a ride elsewhere. We’ll definitely get our supply of them. I always feel like I’m going to jinx us even talking about them, haha.

As the seasons have changed from spring to summer, water temps have steadily risen as days have gotten longer and warmer. Last week we dealt with the warmest temperatures of the year thus far. Highs in the mid-’90s coupled with light winds and bright blue skies made Walleye fishing difficult. Walleye anglers are persistent creatures and never give up easily. Many anglers favored Leeches with slip bobbers and others relied on Lindy rigs for their fishing adventures. Other anglers decided they would take the fight to the night and drag crankbaits on the mid-lake reef structure. I’m not sure which method takes the win as they all did produce fish to differing degrees.

It’s hard to believe we’re already knocking on the door of the 4th of July. Next thing you know we’ll be halfway through the summer and the ever-short resort season. Every year seems faster than the one before it. it’s absolutely amazing to live here in the Walker/Leech Lake area. We’re truly blessed to call this place home and share it with all of our friends, family, guests, and visitors. Every second of the long busy days are worth it, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

Swing by Big Rock, I’ll load up an ice cream cone just for you!
