Making Memorial Memories

Another week, another Walleye, and our first holiday of the summer season. Time is already flying. Memorial Day week/weekend 2024 has already come and gone, which is hard to believe. There was quite a feeling of Deja Vu this year as all 20 of our cabins were returning guests, so many familiar faces!

Fishing was hit or miss depending on the day. Northern Minnesota is still dealing with a rather soggy wet May. After the winter we had with next to zero snow, rain has been great to keep lake levels above average but I’m starting to get sick of the puddles scattered around the resort and my wet feet!

We have been fortunate to have a plentiful supply of bait this year.  John and Lacey Ferris at Full Stringer in Longville are top-notch and keep us stocked with chunky Spottail Shiners, Fatheads, Leeches, and Night Crawlers. The best seller for us has been Shiners by a mile. Leeches are in a distant second. Once the Shiner run ends, which will be soon, we will see a swap to Lindy rigs with Leeches and Night Crawlers. Anglers are still concentrating on shallow wind-blown rock structure with a jig-and-a-minnow presentation, primarily. Many anglers are starting to rely more and more on new electronic gadgets and slip bobbers. As the lake gets more clear Walleye have become much more observant of boats above them, and tricking them to bite has become, well, tricky!

Our annual Memorial Day potluck was a phenomenal success. Mother nature held back her rain and blew away wispy clouds for a beautiful blue-skyed get-together and over 120 hungry attendees shared delicious food. I’m still jealous I didn’t get a cookie! I was able to get my hands on smoked brisket, pulled pork, and some mouth-watering taco salad.

As we reflect each year on the importance of Memorial Day and the unofficial start to summer. I want to take the time to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our United States military you are not forgotten.
