Dog Days are Over

It was another wonderful week here in northern Minnesota, with highs into the lower 80s and lows down into the 50’s with water surface temps back into the low to mid 70’s. While we’re getting to the tail-end of summer season, and most children are getting ready to head back to the class rooms (we’ll miss the kids), fishing, on the other hand is starting to get really good, this fall is going to be gangbusters.

Walleye continue to be found on the mid-lake reefs especially in the evenings, Submarine Island, Annex Reef are probably #1, while North Bar and Mokey Reef have also been good. I’d continue trolling Shad Raps in 8-12 feet, and a little shallower during low light periods, some anglers are using spinner rigs with leeches and crawlers and also having success. Trolling crankbaits allows you to cover plenty of area and you tend to catch anything that bites with them. Walleye are also showing up in pretty much any area that has weeds, the thicker the better, casting or jigging a light jig tipped with pretty much any type of minnow will get results.

Perch have begun their fall routines, Sucker Bay from 1st Duck Pt to 3rd Duck Pt. and into the Walker Narrows have been producing stringers of fish many into the 12 and 13 inch range, while Uram and Miller Bays have fish, they are mostly of the smaller variety; a little later and those bays should be jam-packed full of them.

Pictured above from L to R: a nice meal of Sucker Bay Perch caught by Dave Mathieu and his friend Denny, from Lakeville, MN biggest couple were just under 13 inches. The O’Leary clan from Green Bay, WI with one of 3 stringers of Sucker Bay perch they caught throughout their stay.

Muskies have been on the move, more so in area’s with good vegetation, Grand Vu Flats, Walker Narrows and into the northern end of Walker Bay. Agency and Portage Bays also have good vegetation, and should be holding fish, while areas of the main lake that are primarily rock structure have had some action, but not as much as other areas from what I’ve heard.
