Excitement of a Different Kind

Another week has come and gone in the land of 10,000 puddles and it was an eventful one.  The week started as they all seem to this time of year, sun shinning through the windows, light winds and highs in the lower 80’s, pretty much perfect weather for a day in August. As anyone who’s spent time in the Northwoods during the summer months you know that can change in an instant and it did Monday morning for a small swath of Leech Lake. I guess you could say we were part of the unlucky crew to get hit with high winds and heavy rain that totaled over 5 inches, winds gusted into the area of 70mph for a short duration and sent tubes and water toys flying across the yard and sent numerous tree limbs and a couple of trees themselves crashing to the ground, luckily, no one was hurt. The worst part of it all was dealing without power for the better part of 6 hours, but most people seemed to survive without WiFi. Once the storm passed the resort was a beehive of activity, guests, owners and staff made quick work picking up sticks, pumping boats and getting things back in order, we’re very fortunate to have gotten the additional assistance.

Fishing had its ups and downs as one would expect when mother nature rides a roller coaster like that, we had a few good days and a few that we more on the difficult side.

As you can see from the pictures above, fish are still biting, the bite is really focused on trolling at the moment and will stay that way until we can get the lake cooled off a bit, water temps are still sitting right around 74-75 degrees which is down a couple of degrees from the high point during the heart of July. Mid-lake reef structure is still king at the moment, areas of water that are in the 10-14 foot range seem to be the best.
