Finally Free…. of Ice – Opn’r 2022

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind over the last couple of weeks. If you would have asked me (many of you did) my opinion on ice out I would have been bearish at best, part of me thought for sure we’d be dealing with some frozen projectiles floating in the wakes of boats. I’ve lived in the Northwoods for the majority of my life, and with that I’ve been able to pick up on the subtle nuances that mother nature lays out before us. I know one thing for sure, you don’t count her out when it comes to getting rid of the block of ice that covers the lake, right when you think you have one extra minute, she changes your plans.

Opener for 22 was a sight for sore eyes, this past winter was a little higher on the toughness scale than usual, I don’t recall ever shoveling as much snow or sitting on the tractor pushing it from one end of the resort to the other like I did this year.

Friday the 13th rolled in and with that a full house of resort guests came right with it, I can’t tell you how nice it is to catch up with guests you haven’t seen since last year and the making of new friendships with each new group through.

Walleye fishing was a big of a challenge for most this weekend, water temperatures were cooler than normal with gusty winds battering shorelines throughout the lake, shiner minnows were mostly unavailable in the area, if you were one of the few lucky enough to find some it definitely made a difference, hopefully shiners are plentiful in the coming weeks as, tipping a jig with a spot-tail has always been a favorite of mine. In the meantime, hit those wind-blown points and hold on, Walleye are hungry!

2022 is shaping up to be another busy year up here on beautiful Leech Lake – we cannot wait to see all of you.
